Tierra del Sol Gallery presents Bazaar Bazaar, an end-of-the-year exhibition featuring all 130 Tierra Studio Arts Program artists. Bazaar the show celebrates and highlights the diverse interests and genres of artists at both the Upland and Sunland Studios.

This year, Tierra del Sol gallery director Paige Wery selected one work from each artist, and from these found common themes that together playfully suggest a marketplace of delights. Bazaar Bazaar offers visitors an immersive experience that engages multiple senses, from tactile ceramics and textiles to colorful watercolors, portraits and landscapes.

As gallery director, Wery doesn’t dictate or guide Tierra del Sol artists’ practices, and this exhibition demonstrates the same model of studio-to-gallery relationships that built and maintain the art canon. Encountering the sublime and bringing that experience into the public imagination is exemplified in this year’s group show, while breaking the boundaries of the canon to include those once considered outsiders.

Bazaar Bazaar emphasizes how Tierra del Sol Gallery makes space for the creative, fantastical, the practical and the innovative making of 130 different artists united as community in the Studio Arts Program. Artists who have had solo exhibitions at the gallery are featured throughout the shops alongside their studio coworkers. Visitors will recognize a John Maull floral painting in the Florist boutique and Sarit Halo and Jackie Montes’s whimsical animal ceramics in the Pet Shop. There are home goods, a couture salon, automotive-inspired offerings and artist Victor Frias will be drawing portraits during the opening night at the Portrait Store.

Traditionally, a bazaar or souk is a public market with many offerings of goods. In the west, bazaars are often tied to charitable events and fundraisers. Tierra del Sol Gallery honors both ideas, encouraging visitors to be inspired by the generosity of artists joined by the power and purpose of art making and in return can help support the larger mission of the Tierra del Sol Foundation to champion inclusion and value for all people with disabilities through creative pathways to employment, education, and the arts.

Bazaar Bazaar opens at Tierra del Sol Gallery in West Hollywood on Saturday, November 16th with a reception from 6-8 pm. The exhibition will be on view through December 21st, 2024.

The grand opening and ribbon cutting in Burbank, California will help promote and raise awareness for National Disabilities Awareness Month

Sunland, CA – Tierra del Sol, a nonprofit organization that champions community inclusion for adults with developmental disabilities, will host the grand opening of Tierra’s Treasures, a sustainable second-hand goods boutique benefitting people with developmental disabilities, on March 25, 2023. The ribbon cutting ceremony will take place at 10 a.m. and includes festivities and light refreshments. In addition, a soft opening occurs on March 22 and March 23 with donations accepted from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

“We’re excited to open Tierra’s Treasures,” says CEO Rebecca Lienhard. “It not only benefits the people that Tierra serves, but also provides both paid and volunteer jobs for our associates. People with developmental disabilities have so many gifts and we know Tierra’s Treasures is one more way they can contribute to the community and show the world what people with disabilities are capable of accomplishing.”

The second-hand store will be filled with unique treasures and staffed by those Tierra serves. The proceeds from the boutique will be used to support the programs and services that Tierra offers associates so they can lead a life of value, dignity, and inclusion.

Regular store hours will take place Wednesday through Friday (11 a.m. to 5 p.m.) as well as Saturday and Sunday (10 a.m. to 4 p.m.). Donations of gently used items will also be accepted on Mondays and Tuesdays from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Tierra’s Treasures is located at 3315 Burbank Blvd, Burbank, CA 91505.

The opening of Tierra’s Treasures also marks the celebration of National Disability Awareness Month in March. Tierra del Sol strategically chose this month for the inaugural celebration in order to bring attention to the important issues unique to the community the foundation serves.

Tierra del Sol champions inclusion and value for people with developmental disabilities through creative pathways to workforce development, education, and the arts. Founded 52 years ago by eight families, Tierra now serves 794 people each day throughout the San Fernando, Santa Clarita, and San Gabriel Valleys as well as areas of San Bernardino County through 197 community-based partnerships with businesses, nonprofits, and colleges. Tierra empowers each person served to become productive and valued members of the community.

Zaldivar has been an artist with the Tierra Art Studios since 2011. Like his aesthetic vision, his practice inside the studio is unique. He works with an iPad to find images that excite his imagination, then uses architectural pencils and pens to bring that location to the page, without projection and rarely a ruler. Before he used digital technology to cultivate his creativity, he used Thomas Guide maps to capture space and place.

Zaldivar begins each work in the middle of the paper and works his way to the edges maintaining scale and perspective while adding a stylistically bold and vivid color palette. Reminiscent of David Hockney’s land and cityscapes, and like the works of Manuel Lopez, Zaldivar’s Los Angeles is precise and expansive, colorful and inviting. He documents and extends the architectural wonder of the historic and the mundane. His work puts the viewer in relationship to stories these buildings make and remember, transforming the landscape into a language rather than a rendering.

Joe Zaldivar titled this exhibition at Tierra del Sol and made work specifically about our Chinatown neighborhood. These works depict the creative vitality and cultural richness of our community, built from geometry, artisanship and diversity.

Street Views of Los Angeles opens March 19 and runs through May 7, 2022. Join us for an in-person celebration of Joe and his work on Saturday, March 19, 6-9 pm at our Chinatown gallery location.
